Learning Hour Series: From Student to Soldier - Drexel's Commitment to Its Student Veterans
Start Date: 4/4/2014Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Date: 4/4/2014End Time: 3:00 PM

Event Description
Drexel University has been named a Military-friendly School for the past five years. The award recognizes the best support, flexibility of programs, value and graduation rates. Drexel has also been recognized by Military Advanced Education, G.I. Jobs and the U.S. News and World Report as one of the nation's Best Colleges for Veterans.

This newest Learning Hour will discuss how Drexel's shared governance approach is contributing to a military-friendly culture on campus. The session will look at military culture and traditions and how they contribute to the student veteran experience and transition challenges. What do these men and women bring home and into the classroom? How do their experiences manifest themselves physically and cognitively? A discussion into common concerns and classroom strategies will be explored.

Participants will be introduced to Drexel’s Veteran Services, including university-wide programming, and what role they can play in addressing concerns and creating solutions. They will learn how one department is working with Drexel student veterans to offer more inclusive services and programs.

Learning Hour presenter Angela Brennan is a full time assistant teaching instructor for the Steinbright Career Development Center (SCDC) and a member of the Drexel University Veterans Task Force. She has been teaching career engagement and professional development for SCDC since September 2011. Ms. Brennan also teaches a veterans-only section of Career Management and Professional Development, which serves as a way for student veterans to address their specific professional development needs and get to know and support each other on campus.
