Physics Colloquium: Cherenkov Radiation: New Applications in Oncology
Start Date: 3/3/2016Start Time: 3:30 PM
End Date: 3/3/2016End Time: 4:30 PM

Event Description
Nicole Ackerman, PhD, Agnes Scott College

While the Cherenkov effect has been utilized in astrophysics and particle physics for decades, its potential for biomedical use has only been explored for the past few years. The applications are primarily focused on treating and imaging cancer, but much of the knowledge and techniques necessary come from nuclear and particle physics. In my talk I will explore the biomedical sources of Cherenkov radiation, including nuclear therapy drugs, PET imaging agents, external radiation beams, and multimodal nanoparticles.

Interdisciplinary groups are exploring clinical Cherenkov imaging during surgery, external beam treatment, and endoscopy as well as pre-clinical imaging: testing new drugs in cells and mice.
