Event Description
Drexel University's Online Learning Council (OLC) invites faculty, staff and graduate students across the university to participate in the following fully online professional development opportunities. These courses are free, asynchronous (with deadlines and some collaborative work), and facilitated by faculty experienced in online teaching and learning.

Essentials of Online Teaching
July 9th - August 10th

The Essentials of Online Teaching course provides a faculty-drive, peer-reviewed forum for sharing best practices based on pedagogical research for teaching online. Participants who complete all requirements for this course are eligible to receive a certificate of completion for this course.

In this course, participants will learn how to navigate through Drexel Learn, identify and apply three successful types of engagement in the online classroom, and assess and evaluate the effectiveness of those strategies on current student learning. It is also a terrific forum to network with your online teaching colleagues.

The Essentials of Online Teaching is a 5-week course and requires a commitment of time (5-10 hour/week) to keep up. There will be weekly activities and some group collaboration.

The synchronous orientation session is on Tuesday, May 20th, 6-7 p.m. and will be held in Bb Collaborate. Attendance at the orientation is optional as it will be recorded, archived and available for you to view later.

Please follow this link to register online.

Can’t make this one? The Essentials of Online Teaching will be offered again:

  • August 13 - September 21 (September 3-7 ‘off’ for Labor Day week)

Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APQMR)
The university-wide trend is for those teaching online to become familiar with quality online course design. The Quality Matters (QM) Rubric provides a nationally recognized list of standards for quality course design. Research-supported and practice-based standards of quality course design are associated with increases in both student retention and faculty satisfaction with online education. Quality standards and improvement in online and hybrid courses also have become increasingly important to accreditation bodies. This two-week asynchronous training is designed to help you master best practices in online course design.

Future Dates:
  • November 6 - 20, 2018
  • May 7 - 21, 2019

Advanced Pedagogies and Instructional Design
Advanced Pedagogies and Instructional Design, an advanced online teaching course, builds upon the introductory course’s emphasis on student engagement to practice the design and development of content-rich activities and modules within engaging learning environments. During the advanced five-week course, faculty participants choose a course with which they would like to work.

In a Bb L sandbox within the Advanced Pedagogies shell, participants incorporate the Backward Design model of instructional design to construct portions of what will become a revised online course adhering to Quality Matters Standards™ of course design and the United States Department of Education Standards. Engagement is accomplished using collaborative learning and incorporated throughout this second course. Moreover, participants will learn and integrate the principles of Universal Design. Participants leave the course with updated materials and greater design knowledge ready to be put into place.

The Advanced Pedagogy and Course Design five-week course is facilitated by seasoned online teaching faculty serving as Online Learning Council Faculty Fellows. The next cohort will begin May 7, 2018, the last cohort for this academic year.
